Acrylic Painting: Origin and Presentation

Acrylic painting is one of the most widely practiced techniques today. However, it does not fall yet within the scope of traditional techniques as it is very recent. Indeed, its creation only dates from 1958, unlike watercolors, oil paints and even egg tempera.

Here, acrylic painter Jonathan Marsico, will share more about acrylic painting.

The acrylic paint was invented to meet the expectations of artists, feeling too limited by traditional techniques whose characteristics correspond less to this new way of life. Oil painting requires too much patience, the slowness of its process hardly fits this contemporary era.

Jonathan Marsico shares that the 20th century artist needed a paint that is quick-drying, easy to use and durable. A painting that reflected the new lifestyle, specific to the twentieth century, with mobility, maneuverability and rapid development in all areas.

This scenario has already occurred with the rise of oil painting in the 15th century, which allowed painters to develop their work thanks to the more “realistic” luminosity, transparency and depth, which was not offered by egg tempera. At this time, art was losing its religious symbolism typical of the medieval period for more emotional and realism specific to the Renaissance and its humanism. The artist of the time therefore needed a painting that was more beautiful, more intense and more manageable, allowing more possibilities.

About acrylic painting

As Jonathan Marsico points out, acrylic was first created and marketed in 1958 in the United States. It is a synthetic plastic resin obtained from the distillation of petroleum products. Acrylic paint is therefore a paint "based" on acrylic resin. According to Jonathan Marsico, it is for this reason that as it dries, the paint hardens and becomes resistant, like plastic!

It comes in many qualities, quantities and appearance. School quality, fine or extra-fine / in a small tube or in a large jar / glossy or matt / opaque or transparent, etc. The choice is immense.

Jonathan Marsico specifies that acrylic paint has many qualities, such as:

· Its adaptability, it can be applied on all supports

· Its drying speed

· Its permanence, once dry it is final

· Its many possibilities of effects thanks to its wide range of mediums

· Its perfect preservation

· Its resistance

· Its insensitivity to humidity

· Its simplicity, no need for varnish, acrylic is washable

Jonathan Marsico indicates that if you use acrylics, there will be no more fuzziness, long waiting times, yellowing colors or cracks inherent in oil painting.
